Your journey begins with your arrival in Leh, the capital of Ladakh. At an altitude of 11,500 feet, Leh requires a day for acclimatization to help your body adjust to the high altitude. Spend the day relaxing, hydrating, and exploring the local markets at a leisurely pace. This day is crucial to ensure you’re prepared for the trek ahead.
After an early breakfast, you’ll drive from Leh to Likir, a journey of about 60 kilometers. Likir is the starting point of the Sham Valley trek and is home to the famous Likir Monastery, known for its beautiful murals and large Buddha statue. From Likir, the trek begins with a gradual ascent through scenic landscapes, crossing two passes: Phobe La (3,580 meters) and Chagatse La (3,710 meters). The day’s trek ends at Yangthang, a quaint village nestled amidst the mountains, where you’ll camp for the night.
The third day takes you from Yangthang to the picturesque village of Hemis Shukpachan, known for its lush greenery and streams.
