The Sandakphu with Phoktey Dara & Singalila Top trek is a journey that takes you along the Indo-Nepal border, offering close encounters with some of the world’s tallest peaks, including Mt. Everest, Mt. Kanchenjunga, Mt. Makalu, and Mt. Lhotse. This trek is unique in that it provides better views of the Sleeping Buddha formation from Phoktey Dara Top than the traditional Sandakphu route, making it a must-do for trekking enthusiasts seeking unparalleled Himalayan vistas.
This trek also takes you through the Singalila Ridge, which is known for its stunning landscapes, including the lush bamboo and rhododendron forests, and an abundance of wildlife. The trek offers a deep connection with nature and the local culture, providing trekkers with a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from NJP or Bagdogra to Uttarey Base Camp. The journey takes you through winding mountain roads, passing through picturesque tea estates and quaint villages. Upon arrival at the base camp, you'll be briefed on the trek route and given an overview of the days ahead. Spend the evening relaxing and acclimatizing at the camp.
The trek starts after a hearty breakfast, as you begin your ascent towards Acchiley. The trail involves gradual ascends and descends, allowing you to acclimatize to the altitude while enjoying the stunning surroundings. By late afternoon, you will reach Acchiley, where you'll be treated to a panoramic view of the Kanchenjunga massif if the weather is clear.
Wake up early to witness the mesmerizing sight of the Sleeping Buddha bathed in the golden rays of the morning sun. After breakfast, you'll start your trek to Kalizar. The trail today is moderate, with gradual climbs leading you through pristine landscapes. The trek takes about six hours, and you'll spend the night camping under the stars at Kalizar.
This is one of the most rewarding days of the trek. You will start early in the morning to reach Phoktey Dara, where you'll witness a breathtaking sunrise with the first rays of the sun lighting up the peaks of Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu. The trek continues along the Singalila Ridge, where the trails from Nepal and India converge. After reaching the summit, you will descend to Phalut, a small grassland with expansive views of the surrounding mountains.
Today's trek takes you from the open grasslands of Phalut down to the lush forests surrounding Samandin. The trail is long but relatively moderate, taking you through dense forests and open clearings. Samandin is known for its windy conditions, especially in the winter, so make sure to carry enough water from Phalut, as it is scarce along this route.
The final day of your trek involves a 3-hour descent to Barhan, where you'll complete the trekking portion of your journey. From Barhan, you'll embark on an 8-hour drive back to NJP or Bagdogra, bringing your incredible adventure to a close.
