The Goechala Trek is one of the most thrilling and picturesque treks in Sikkim, offering stunning views of the majestic Mt. Kanchenjunga. This trek, categorized as moderate to difficult, starts and ends in Yuksom, a charming town in Sikkim. The trek is best undertaken between September and November when the skies are clear, providing panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks throughout the journey. The Goechala Trek is not just a test of endurance but a spiritual journey through the serene landscapes of Sikkim.
Start your adventure with a drive from Bagdogra Airport or NJP Railway Station to Yuksom. The journey offers beautiful glimpses of the Sikkimese landscape as you travel through winding mountain roads and lush green valleys. Yuksom, a quaint town with historical significance, will be your base for the trek.
Your first day of trekking involves a gradual ascent through dense rhododendron forests along the Rathong River. This relatively easy trek introduces you to the serene beauty of the region as you make your way to the small clearing of Sachen, where you'll camp for the night.
The trek to Tshoka takes you deeper into the forest, crossing the Prek Chu River and passing through the quaint settlement of Bakhim. As you ascend, the views become increasingly spectacular, with clear glimpses of Mt. Pandim and Mt. Kanchenjunga if the weather permits. Tshoka, a small village perched on a ridge, offers your first major campsite with incredible views.
This day involves a steep climb through beautiful rhododendron forests to reach Phedang, a scenic clearing where you can rest before continuing to Dzongri. The trail is demanding but rewards you with breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks surrounding the Dzongri campsite.
After a challenging trek the previous day, take it easy today. A short trek to Dzongri Top early in the morning provides a mesmerizing view of the sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range. This is a day to relax, acclimatize, and soak in the grandeur of the Himalayan panorama.
The trek to Thansing takes you through alternating ascents and descents, passing dense forests and rocky landscapes. Thansing is located at the base of Mt. Pandim, offering a serene camping spot with stunning views.
This is the longest and most challenging day of the trek. Starting early in the morning, you will trek to the Goechala View Point, crossing the pristine Samiti Lake on the way. The view of Mt. Kanchenjunga from the viewpoint is nothing short of spectacular. After spending some time at the viewpoint, you will retrace your steps back to Thansing.
Begin your descent from Thansing to Tshoka, following the same route through Kokchurang and Phedang. The trek is moderate and offers plenty of time to take in the changing scenery as you descend into lower altitudes.
The final day of trekking involves descending back to Yuksom, crossing the Prek Chu River once again. Upon reaching Yuksom, you'll check into a guesthouse and unwind after completing this incredible trek.
After breakfast, drive back to NJP Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport, marking the end of your journey.
