The Hampta Pass Trek is celebrated as one of the most scenic and adventurous treks in the Himachal region. This trek offers a mesmerizing journey through varying landscapes—from the lush green meadows of Kullu Valley to the stark, glacial valleys at higher altitudes. As you trek, you’ll witness the dramatic changes in terrain, making it an exhilarating experience for both novice and seasoned trekkers alike.
The trek spans over four days, beginning from the beautiful town of Manali and progressing through dense forests, expansive meadows, and the challenging Hampta Pass. This trek provides not just the thrill of crossing a high-altitude pass but also breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
The best months to embark on the Hampta Pass Trek are May, June, and from August through October, when the trails are clear, and the weather is most favorable.
Altitude: 6,726 ft to 9,700 ft to 10,400 ft
Your adventure begins with an assembly at the Manali main circle (go chakkar) at 9:30 AM. After breakfast, we drive to Jobra, a journey of about 1.5 hours through the picturesque Kullu Valley. Upon reaching Jobra, we start our trek towards Chikka. The trek is relatively short, taking about 2 hours, and takes us through dense forests of pine, chestnut, and maple trees. The campsite at Chikka is warm and cozy, nestled amidst protective mountain ranges.
Altitude: 10,400 ft to 11,400 ft
On this day, we undertake a moderate trek of about 6 to 7 hours. The journey begins with a patch of boulders leading us to the Rani Nalla, a stream that needs to be crossed early in the day before the water levels rise. After crossing the stream, we continue through the lush, flower-filled meadows of Jwara. The trail ascends gradually, leading us through muddy paths and boulder-strewn landscapes to the expansive plains of Balu ka Gera, where we set up camp for the night.
Altitude: 11,400 ft to 14,100 ft to 12,500 ft
This day marks the most challenging part of the trek. We start early, climbing steadily towards the Hampta Pass, the highest point of the trek at 14,100 ft. The ascent is steep and requires a good level of fitness. Upon reaching the pass, we are rewarded with stunning views of surrounding peaks like Deo Tibba and Indrasan. After a short rest and lunch at the pass, we begin the descent towards Shia Goru, where we camp for the night.
Altitude: 12,500 ft to 11,000 ft
The final day of the trek involves a descent from Shia Goru to Chatru. This section of the trek is easier, as we lose altitude gradually. Once we reach Chatru, we board our vehicles and drive back to Manali, concluding our adventure.
