The Kedarkantha Trek is one of the most sought-after treks in the Indian Himalayas, especially known for its accessibility and rewarding summit experience. Set in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, this trek is perfect for beginners and seasoned trekkers alike. The Kedarkantha Trek offers stunning 360-degree views of the Himalayas, making it an ideal choice for those looking to experience the beauty of the mountains, whether in the snow-clad winters or the blooming summers.
The trek covers approximately 18 kilometers, with a mix of gradual ascents and descents, making it moderately challenging. According to local folklore, the Kedarkantha summit is believed to be the spot where Lord Shiva meditated, leaving behind his “Kantha-haar” (throat ornament) at the summit before departing. Today, a Trishul (Trident) marks the summit, adding a spiritual element to this adventurous journey.
Beginner-Friendly: With its moderate difficulty level, the Kedarkantha Trek is ideal for those new to trekking in the Himalayas. The well-defined trail, manageable distances, and availability of local guides make it a safe and enjoyable experience for all.
The trek begins with an early morning drive from Dehradun to Sankri, a charming village that serves as the base camp for the Kedarkantha Trek. The journey takes you through scenic landscapes, including the famous Kempty Falls and the lush forests of the Garhwal region. After arriving in Sankri, you’ll check into a guesthouse, where you’ll have time to rest and acclimate. In the evening, there will be a team briefing to discuss the trek itinerary, safety protocols, and other important details.
After breakfast, the trek begins with a gradual ascent from Sankri towards Juda Ka Talab. The trail winds through dense pine forests, crossing streams and small clearings. Juda Ka Talab is a serene, high-altitude lake surrounded by towering pine trees, making it a perfect campsite for the night. The tranquil environment and the starry night sky create a memorable camping experience.
The trek continues from Juda Ka Talab to the Kedarkantha base camp. The trail ascends through dense forests and opens up to clearings that offer glimpses of the summit. As you approach the base camp, the Kedarkantha peak comes into full view, creating a sense of anticipation for the summit climb. The evening is spent at the base camp, preparing for the early morning ascent to the summit.
Summit day begins early, with the goal of reaching the peak by sunrise. The final ascent is steep and challenging, but the breathtaking views from the summit make it all worthwhile. From the top, you can see the majestic Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and Kalanag peaks, along with other towering giants of the Garhwal Himalayas. After soaking in the views, you’ll descend back to the base camp for lunch before continuing down to Hargaon for the night.
The final day of the trek involves a descent from Hargaon back to Sankri. The trail takes you through forests and meadows, offering one last chance to enjoy the natural beauty of the region. Once back in Sankri, you’ll have lunch before beginning the drive back to Dehradun, where the trek officially ends.
